5 Easy Steps to Get You up and Running on Your First eBay Auction in 2024

Setting up your first auction on eBay doesn’t have to be an overwhelming experience. The following five steps will take you through the process of posting your first item for sale.

Step 1: Open an eBay Seller’s Account

If you have ever bought anything through them, you already have an account. Just log in, click ‘Sell’ in the top toolbar, and then ‘Create a seller’s account’. If you have never used eBay before, first sign up for an account using the ‘register’ link below the toolbar, then hit ‘Sell’ followed by ‘Create a seller’s account.’ The site will lead you through setting it up, although this might involve giving your card and bank details for security purposes.

Step 2: Pick Something to Sell

For your first sale, it doesn’t really matter what you’re selling. Take a glance around the room for something that you don’t mind parting with—small books or CDs make great first items.

Step 3: Listing Your Item

Click ‘Sell’ to begin listing your item. First, select a category—just type the name of your item in and let eBay suggest a category; that is the easiest route. Then describe what you are selling: in the title, put keywords which people might search for; in your description, include everything which is relevant.

Now set the initial price, say, at $0.01. This will attract more bidders, and such auctions seldom end at that price. Also, you can decide how long you want the auction to last: 3, 5, 7, or 10 days. The longer listings seem to get more bids; however, they can also end up being terribly slow. If you have a picture, then you can upload it now; items having pictures in their listing sell for more money. Select the Payment Options— PayPal is the easiest for now—and the list where you’ll ship to. For most of us starters, that would be limited to your local country. Now, submit your listing and there you go!

Step 4: Monitor the Bidding

Now, step back and let eBay work its magic. Now buyers will view your item and start bidding. A couple of bidders may even email you with questions—take time to answer them promptly. Don’t worry if your item doesn’t sell; you can relist your item for free.

Step 5: Get Paid and Send It Off

eBay will walk your buyer through how to complete the payment. Just make sure you’re paid up front before you ship.

Once the payment is confirmed, pack the item securely (bubble wrap really works wonders), and label using the address given from the buyer in the confirmation email. Use appropriate postage on the package and mail; you’re all set!

Congratulations, you sold your first item! In our next email, once you get going, we will give you a checklist of how to be a successful eBay seller.
