PlayStation game Foamstars is going free..
Foamstars will be a free-to-play game starting next October, after the game's sales fell short of expectations.
The game, meanwhile, has been sold for $30 since its release on PlayStation 5 and 4, but starting October 4, 2024, it will become completely free for everyone.
This does not mean that the game will end its exclusivity on Sony platforms, as there was no mention of whether there is a plan to release it on other platforms. The following statement was issued by Square Enix:
Thank you for your support of Foomstars. Foamstars, currently available on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, will change from its current regional price to a free-to-play game starting October 4, 2024.
Additionally, while a PS Plus subscription was previously required to play Foamstars, after the price change, players who are not subscribed to the monthly service can download and play Foamstars for free.
For those who downloaded Foamstars prior to this price change, we plan to distribute a free “special gift” that includes these exclusive in-game items:
- 12 exclusive Bubble Beastie skins in a variety of colors
- 1 Exclusive Slide Board Design
- 1 Legacy title
According to Square Enix, Foamstars, along with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Final Fantasy 16, performed poorly and far below expectations, and the Japanese company blamed these games for the poor financial results.
Of course, converting the Foamstars game to become free will be accompanied by many changes that will be applied to the game, most notably broader support for in-game sales to become the new source of income and an alternative to the basic sales that Square Enix will abandon starting next October.
