Google Pixel 9 supports satellite communication
Google has announced that the new Pixel 9 phones will support the “Satellite SOS” feature, which allows you to contact emergency services via satellite, making them the first Android devices outside China to provide this service.
The Satellite SOS feature, which is now rolling out, enables users to send messages and share their location in emergency situations when there is no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage.
The feature is made possible by the Exynos 5400 modem in the chip. Tensor G4which supports the Release 17 standard for cellular networks, including non-terrestrial networks such as satellites.
This feature is very useful in remote areas such as forests or areas that have suffered from natural disasters.
For now, Google has confirmed that Satellite SOS is only available to users in the US. It will be free for two years, after which it will require a paid subscription, like Apple’s service.
Although the feature comes after a period of Chinese manufacturers introducing similar technologies in their home markets, such as the series HUAWEI Mate 60 Which even supports satellite phone calls, but Google’s entry into this field indicates a growing trend towards offering satellite communication features in global markets.
